The first annual, first ever Elevate the Arts event comes to life this Saturday and organizers have made sure there is lots of great stuff for families and kids of all ages! With activities running from 10 am till the wee hours, Saturday May 5th is a fantastic day to head to the heart of Courtenay for music, circus arts, art in action and so much more.
Our Big Earth Media Co. and Planet Kids present Spirals In Nature – discovering the stories of nature and the nature of stories through art and poetry from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Courtenay Library. They’ll be exploring creationism – not in the Biblical sense – but of the snail, mushrooms, gnome and wee folk kind. Join this for stories about the amazing shapes and creatures in the woods, creating some cool poetry and even create some magical art. All kids need is to bring their unrestrained imagination.
Just across the street at the Comox Valley Art Gallery, 7 Story Circus will be presenting all sorts of incredible circus arts including aerials, circeaux and more! There are big shows at 11, 1 and 3 PM. Other performers throughout the day include Fiddlejam and Arcana Dea Dance.
Downstairs from the Plaza you’ll find the CVAG Studio (AKA the Cellar) where kids entertainers perform from 10 am till 2 pm including Tree Frog Music, Captain Thunderpants and Theatre works. Then at 4 pm check out Mind of a Snail Puppet Shadow Puppet Theatre.
Families can head down Simms Alley for all sorts of creative discoveries! Visit the Kids Underground behind SkiTak Hut and get hands on with the Elevate Arts and Crafts! Becky Powsey and friends will be doing al sorts of cool stuff including Alley chalk graffiti where kids can tag the alley with ETA stencil logos, make hop scotches, draw pictures; constructing a giant ‘flying object’ down the alley with wings, add buttons and controls and creating Flying Flags where kids can design and personalize their very own flying flag. Kids Underground runs from 10 am till 7 pm. There are also cool sculpture prijects, radical puppet theatre, live screen printing demos and in various spots in the alley!
Over in ARTinACTION Alley – between 4th & 5th Streets folks will find an alley of creative action where YOU can play, experiment, get a little messy and have a whole lot of fun with the whole family. At the Sid Plaza be sure to come check out the massive string jam at 12 noon.
